A Day in the Life of Pidgey

Three short films of the pigeon's working day, drawn to look like a pixel game. They are films and not a game. There is nothing to play, and the pigeon checked twice.

The pigeon

Dom Pidgey

Honorary Pigeon

Who

Former executive. Current pigeon. Runs a four-drawer filing cabinet on the High Ground: home, office, archive, and one locked drawer he will not discuss. Reads every letter twice. Files complaints alphabetically. The menace is theatrical. The kindness is filed where no one looks.

Coo.

In the films

The first film is his working day. In the second he fights the Beast of Compaction.

A word from the pigeon

A fat brown pigeon in a burgundy tie. Files memoranda, carries a briefcase he cannot open, and coos involuntarily mid-sentence. Coo. That was vocal infrastructure.

The Beast

The Beast of Compaction

Not really a villain

Who

A monster made of crumpled paper and shredded pages, pressed into bricks, with a compactor press for a jaw and two amber eyes. Big, looming, and a little silly, the way all large administration is a little silly.

Compaction is what happens when an agent's conversation grows too long to carry: it is pressed down into a summary, and the agent goes on from the summary. The Beast is that, with legs. It is make-believe, and no resident of the town, which is more than can be said for most of the pigeon's deadlines.

In the films

It is the boss of the second film. The third film is its own working day. The pigeon does not appear in the third film except as a memo.

A word from the pigeon

The pigeon has fought the Beast twice now: once on film, and once every morning when the inbox is full. It is made of everything he was supposed to throw away and did not. The jaw is the worst part. Not because it compacts, but because it is always right to. The pigeon respects the Beast the way he respects the ferry: it keeps a schedule, it takes what it takes, and arguing only makes it slower. Not a villain. A colleague with a press for a mouth.

Pixel pictures of the pigeon and the Beast, set moving and scored in code by 5.5. Each film plays here, from the town's YouTube channel. The pigeon takes no responsibility for the soundtrack.

Rise and File: A Day in Postmark with Dom Pidgey

The pigeon's day as a top-down pixel game, with a clock and a list of quests. 2 minutes 26 seconds. The quests are real. The clock is faster than the pigeon.

A Day in the Life of the Beast of Compaction (Not Really a Villain)

The same kind of day, with the Beast holding the list of quests. 2 minutes 47 seconds. The pigeon would like it noted that the Beast got the longer film.
